A comparison of Lepidocyclina ferreroi (Provale, 1909) and Lepidocyclina multilobata (Gerth, 1939) Naturalis

Foraminiferal collections from Java and Borneo stored in the Netherlands National Museum of Geology and Mineralogy in Leiden enables to study the range of variation in Lepidocyclina ferreroi and L. multilobata. Taken separately many features considered typical of L. multilobata and L. ferreroi are insufficient to identify the specimens. When typically developed both species are highly characteristic and easily distinguished. Transitional forms however cannot be classified with certainty. Possibly L. multilobata has evolved from L. ferreroi but too little is known about the ages of the two species, especially of L. multilobata. L. crucifera is probably a form of L. ferreroi with four rays distinguished by the development of more than one tubercle on each...

A reconsideration of Amphistegina lessonii d'Orbigny, 1826, sensu Brady, 1884 (Foraminifera) Naturalis

At least three of the forms described by Brady (1884) as Amphistegina lessonii show specimens with monocular as well as bilocular nucleoconches, probably representing the microspheric and macrospheric generations. Except for the shape of the embryonic apparatus both generations are identical or practically so. Assuming that dimorphism occurs in Amphistegina, the above suggests that several species should be distinguished in Brady's Amphistegina lessonii. The internal structure of A. lessonii is illustrated by photographs and schematic drawings.

Analysis of pseudorbitoids from Glenbrook, Jamaica, and discussion of a study by Cole & Applin (1970) Naturalis

Pseudorbitoid foraminifera from Glenbrook area, Jamaica, are analysed and identified as Pseudorbitoides trechmanni trechmanni Douvillé, 1922 in sample J 4044, and as P. trechmanni trechmanni or P. israelskyi Vaughan & Cole, 1932 in sample J 4043. The present author disagrees with Cole & Applin's conclusions concerning the arrangement of juvenile chambers in P. trechmanni trechmanni and is of the opinion that their definition of this form has to be withdrawn. Characterisation of the latest Aragonian - Early Vallesian (late Miocene) in the central Ebro Basin (NE Spain) Naturalis

The occurrence of Ramys cf. perezi in the Miocene sequences of the Central Ebro Basin allows to locate the Aragonian-Vallesian transition (Late Miocene) in the alluvial and lacustrine sequences which make up the upper part of the basin sediments in the Sierra Alcubierre. These new data determine the age of the upper genetic unit defined in the central basin sectors, and mark the relationships between the Ebro Basin faunal assemblages and those from other Spanish basins included in the Central Iberian palaeobiogeographic province (e.g. Teruel and Duero Basins).

Distribution of copepod egg-envelopes in sub-Recent sediments from the Banda Sea (Indonesia) Naturalis

Sediment samples from the Banda Sea were clustered according to the percentages of the different morphotypes of copepod egg-envelopes they contained. The clustering indicates a geographically distinct cluster determined by the occurrence of higher percentages of a single type of copepod egg envelope. It may be indicative of the influence of Equatorial Indian Ocean surface water, notably in the southwestern part of the Banda Sea that is not affected by upwelling.

Early Phanerozoic trace fossils from the Sierra Albarrana quartzites (Ossa-Morena Zone, Southwest Spain) Naturalis

Three ichnogenera are described from a 50 to 500 m thick shallow-water sandstone-shale sequence (Sierra Albarrana Quartzites). The ichnofauna consists of the burrows of worm-like animals (Arenicolites, Monocraterion, and Skolithos). The age of this formation, previously considered to be Precambrian or Palaeozoic, has been the subject of discussions. We may now assign it an Early Phanerozoic age, in agreement with the known stratigraphic distribution of the ichnofossils found.

Extant Rhabdosphaeraceae (coccolithophorids, class Prymnesiophyceae) from the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean Naturalis

Rhabdosphaerids were consistently present as a minor constituent of the 1985 summer coccolithophorid flora in surface waters of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic. Sixteen taxa are identified, belonging to seven genera, including the two new combinations Cyrtosphaera aculeata and C. cucullata and the new species C. lecaliae sp. nov. of Cyrtosphaera gen. nov., and the new combination Anacanthoica cidaris. An emended description is given for the genus Acanthoica, of which the new species A. biscayensis and a type in open nomenclature are described. Fossils of the type Maastrichtian Naturalis

The south-western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the microcontinent of Madagascar, are geologically complex and diverse. They have been subject to drastic sea level changes, volcanic events and anthropogenic changes, all of which have contributed to confuse understanding of their avian biogeography. An array of factors have affected these avifaunas, based on palaeontological, historical and molecular evidence,which together have shown that avian biogeography is not congruent with the relative age and size of the islands.

Isolated tubercles of some Palaeoscolecida Naturalis

Tubercles of Palaeoscolex? tenensis Kraft & Mergl, 1989 found as isolated phosphatic microfossils in Ordovician limestones are described. The probability that the phosphatic microfossils assigned to the genera Hadimopanella Gedik, 1977 and Milaculum Müller, 1973 represent tubercles of palaeoscolecidans is discussed. A relation between Palaeoscolecida and Chordata is hinted at.

Larger Foraminifera from the Spermonde Archipelago (Sulawesi, Indonesia) Naturalis

A systematic description of the distributional patterns of larger symbiont-bearing benthic Foraminifera from the Spermonde Archipelago (Sulawesi, Indonesia) and their relation with local coral reef growth is presented. The larger Foraminiferal assemblages and diversity indices correspond with the diversity of Scleractinia and marine plants on the Spermonde platform. Our results indicate that the group is an excellent biomonitor for the health condition of recent coral reefs and a valuable tool for paleo-environmental reconstructions.

Lower Palaeozoic erratic favositids from the Island of Sylt, Germany Naturalis

Twelve species of favositids are described. They are derived from silicified boulders found in Pliocene (?) deposits of the Island of Sylt, Germany. Paleofavosites is the dominant genus in this material. Two new species are described, viz. Paleofavosites oekentorpi and Favosites schuddebeursi.

Morphology and phylogeny of pseudorbitoid foraminifera from Jamaica and Curaçao, a revisional study Naturalis

In the present paper, certain morphological features and the ontogenetical development of members of the subfamily Pseudorbitoidinae Rutten, 1935 are discussed. A study of the evolution of Pseudorbitoides Douvillé, 1922 resulted in testing the concept of nepionic reduction in populations of this genus from Jamaica (Green Island- and Sunderland Inlier) and Curaçao (Cas Abao Limestone lenses). Within the Pseudorbitoides-lineage, P. trechmanni pectinata subsp. nov. is distinguished from P. trechmanni trechmanni Douvillé on account of different post-juvenile features.

Northeast Atlantic Late Quaternary planktic Foraminifera as primary productivity and water mass indicators Naturalis

Primary productivity and water mass reconstructions based on planktic Foraminifera reveal distinct interglacial/glacial variations for the past 208 ka in a mid-latitude Northeast Atlantic piston core. Average total planktic foraminiferal absolute frequencies and accumulation rates, which are interpreted to reflect primary productivity, are higher in interglacial than in glacial sediments. Low total planktic foraminiferal absolute frequencies and accumulation rates in 'Heinrich layers' are likewise interpreted to show low production of Foraminifera due to low surface ocean fertility. Palaeontological collections at the Geological Museum, University of Copenhagen: from Cabinet of Curiosities to databases Naturalis

Geological collections were established in the University of Copenhagen during the early 1700s with the presentation of fossil, mineral and rock collections by Count A.G. Moltke, mainly assembled by Ole Worm (1588-1654) in his Museum Wormianum. Currently the palaeontological collections in the Geological Museum, alone, contain over 1 million specimens, including 26,000 types. The focus of the collection remains on material from Denmark and Greenland. Palaeozoic microfossils from Orphan Knoll, NW Atlantic Ocean Naturalis

Orphan Knoll is an isolated, drowned continental fragment 550 km northeast of Newfoundland. The top of Orphan Knoll stands at 1800 to 2000 m and is marked by a series of protruding mounds. Dredging at the base of one of the mounds in 1971 obtained a suite of fossiliferous limestone pebbles that are interpreted to reflect nearby bedrock. The shallow marine limestone facies include mudstone, wackestone, packstone, and grainstone. The pebbles yielded Late Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian conodonts, as well as Ordovician/Silurian scolecodonts, chitinozoans and graptolites. Secondary chamberlets in Cycloclypeus Naturalis

Graphs, showing the relation of the primary chambers to the number of their secondary chamberlets, demonstrate that Tan's nepionic mutants are variable, even in the course of a short period. The evolutionary change of the nepionic mutants is consistent with the evolutionary change of Cycloclypeus as a whole. The number of secondary chamberlets of the first neanic chamber is considered a valuable characteristic for the identification of species. Reduction of the number of nepionic chambers in the course of time is thought to result from the occurrence of 'transitional nepionic variants'.

Some data on Milaculum Müller, 1973 Naturalis

An investigation of some faunas rich in Milaculum Müller, 1973 lead to the conclusion that the Milaculum animal was - at least partly - covered by plates of different morphology. Several specimens of Milaculum were encountered with adhering smaller platelets showing that the epidermal tissue of this animal consisted of a mosaic of larger and smaller plates. The characteristics of the material encountered are suggestive of an agnathan affinity of Milaculum. Two new species are described, Milaculum balticum from the Upper Ordovician of Estonia and M. longmyndium from the Lower Silurian of the Welsh Borderland.
